Hovhannavank is a magnificent medieval monastic complex dedicated to John the Baptist (Surb Hovhannes), perched on a rocky cliff above the Kasakh River Gorge. The earliest structures date back to the 5th century, but the main parts, including the main church Surb Karapet (13th century), were built under the patronage of the Vachutyan princes. The monastery is an excellent example of Armenian architecture and one of the best locations for observing the majestic nature of Armenia.
